Consistency, consistency, consistency in San Antonio
Consistency win championships, especially in rodeo. In most other sports, you can play poorly for two-thirds to three-quarters of a game and still come back and win it all with a miracle play. In rodeo you have to be on top of your game each and every time you set foot in the arena.
And when you have 40 or 50 of the world's best rodeo competitors in one place, you can't afford even the slightest mistake and in San Antonio this year we're seeing that play out night after night. San Antonio changed it's rules this year. This year each competitor is up 4 times, 4 performances in a row and they can earn money each night. At the end of those four performances the 5 competitors who have earned the most money will come back for the semi-finals and try to earn their way into the finals.
So far have the first group of semi-finalists determined and after tonight's (Thursday) we'll have our next set of 5. Going into tonight's performance, Caleb Bennett, Ryan Stutes, Eric Swenson, Evan Jayne and Steven Peebles
have all earned money is 2 of the 3 bareback rounds (no one has hit all 3). In Steer Wrestling, Olin Hannum and Dane Hanna are tied for the top spot with 3,111.25 earned so far with Brad Gilcrest sitting in 3rd based on his earnings of 2,075 which he took home for turfing his steer in 4.6 on Tuesday.
Tie-down has (well who else) world champion Trevor Brazile leading the way after 2 1st place wins on Tuesday and Wednesday, Fred Whitfield has also been consistent, but could use a good showing tonight to cement a place
in the semis. Team roping is wide open with Brandon Beers and Ryan Mtes sitting on top and defending world champions Nick Sartain and Kollin VonAhn in a time with Luke Brown and Martin Lucero, both of those teams could easily take a round, but then again so could every team entered.
Saddle bronc seems to be coming down to a tight race with Taos Muncy, Isaac Diaz and Ty Atchison leading the way with Taos showing his world championship skills. In the Barrels, well Syndi Blanchard has a commanding lead and should easily qualify for the semis, with Lisa Lockhart, Britany Fleck and Sherry Cervi close behind. In bull riding Steve Woolsey is the only rider to cover all 3 of his rides, Clint Craig is right behind him with Beau Schroeder and Howdy Cloud each having won a performance and stlll in the mix.
After tonight we get another group of competitors coming in for their chance to show why their consistency makes them some of the best in the world.

Over the years one rodeo company became known for putting on almost rock and roll types of rodeos. They were out of South Texas and they went under the name of Bad Company Rodeo. In 2007 and 2008 Susan Kanode did a series on their world famous bull 'Walk-this'Way', which we proudly ran and if you missed any of the chapters you can find them here. In 2009 Bad Company for whatever reason decided to pull back and essentially disappeared from the circuit. Well, they've decided to come back and they've announced their 'Back In The Saddle' tour 2010.
Two initial events on March 20 in Stockdale, Texas at the Smokin Spring Bar-B-Q cookoff and Pro Bull Riding (40 Head Bull Riding with $2,500 added) and (Who's Your Daddy - Junior Bull Riding with $500 in added money) and then April 9-11 at the Poteet Strawberry Festival Rodeo and Bull Riding...check them out the website is www.badcompanyrodeo.com

Due to some unexpected issues it's not going to be possible for me to be live at as many performances as I had originally planned. Sometimes life's responsibilities get in the way of doing what you always want to do....anyway, I'll be doing this type of recap, based on information I receive...
last year the ladies were running the barrels incredibly fast. In fact the times were so fast and so consistent that those of us who had covered the rodeo for years were surprised and commented on it. There were several times under 14 seconds, the arena record was set by Tiffany Fox at 13.69 seconds and there were multiple runs under 14.10, so it was truly fast times.
This year things haven't been quite so fast, and on Monday the ladies seemed to be almost a step slower and that this seen in the times, Tuesday showed dramatic improvement with Sydni Blanchard blazing around the cloverleaf in 13.75, Sherry Cervi, Marana, AZ..14.11 (great improvement over Monday where she was 14.48) $1,555.63...Brenda Mays, Terrebonne, OR 14.23 (vs 14.45 on Monday), $1,037.08, Mary Burger, Pauls Valley, OK 14.28 (vs 14.58) $518.54,...Lisa Lockhart, Oelrichs, SD at 14.33 was a little slower than Monday's time of 14.29...Sheena Robbins, Fresno, CA 14.42 beat her Monday 14.47...Christina Richman, from Glendora, CA got a clean run (she knocked over a barrel on Monday) 14.49...Haley Thorne, Midlothian, TX, fell back with a 14.53...Canadian Champ Deb Renger, Okotoks, AB, also stumbled a little.14.63....Sue Berg, Bloomington, MN..14.67...Terra Bynum, Colorado City, TX...14.95..Monday's performance leader Britany Fleck, Mandan, ND knocked over a barrel and had a 19.23, if she hadn't had that misstep, she'd have been tied for 3rd in the performance....

From The PRCA
"Jimmy Schumacher, the first rodeo barrelman to ply his trade with a barrel open at both ends and a member of the inaugural class of the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 1979, died at a Las Vegas hospital Jan. 24. He was 89.
Schumacher, who grew up in Prescott, Ariz., began his rodeo career as a roughstock competitor. He won the bull riding at the Calgary (Alberta) Stampede in 1945 and also won the bareback riding event there twice.
After 15 years of competition, he gave it up to replace the “original barrelman” Jasbo Fulkerson who was killed in a truck accident. Schumacher took the bottom out of the barrel as a means of escape and originated the first ‘walking barrel.’ He even had a patent on it, and it is on display at the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Schumacher was injured badly by a bull named Buster at the 1969 National Finals Rodeo in Oklahoma City when the bull picked up the barrel, with Schumacher in it, and tossed it over his head. Schumacher broke all the ribs on one side and one punctured his lung. The doctor told him he’d have to undergo surgery to remove the rib unless Schumacher could cough hard enough to dislodge it. He did what the doctor suggested, and he left the hospital the next week without surgery.
“You had to be able to bruise easy, but heal quick,” Schumacher said of his chosen occupation.
He began his career as a barrelman in 1948 and didn’t retire until 1972. He was hired by many of the top rodeos such as Madison Square Garden, Phoenix, Belle Fourche, S.D., Denver, Fort Worth and Houston, and was selected to work as the NFR barrelman nine times (1960, 1962-69).
After retirement, Schumacher did many things, but was known for working for various casinos, beginning at Binion’s, running the Big Six Wheel of Fortune. When he retired from the casino world, he and his wife, Alice, moved to Prescott, but said, “There were too many old people there. I was startin’ to walk like them,” so the consummate funnyman returned to Las Vegas.
Schumacher and Alice were married 56 years at the time of her death in February 2009. He is survived by two sons; Sid and Rodney; wife, Robin; and two grandsons, Adam and Sean, all of Las Vegas. Schumacher was cremated and his ashes will be scattered on a favorite butte of his in Prescott, Ariz. Memorials should be made to the Justin Crisis Cowboy Fund in his name."
Let's never forget those who paved the way for us and who helped make rodeo what it is today. R.I.P. Jimmy and may God Bless and comfort your family....

February has arrived. Can you believe it? It seems the older I get the sooner each month passes into the next, it was just a couple of days ago that NWSS started and then it was done, Fort Worth is now underway and it too will wrap this week, Rapid City’s slack and Xtreme bulls are done and gone. Ah, life in the fast lane.
Coming up is San Antonio and I plan on being there and blogging live for each performance, (except for the Sunday afternoon one – since I’m a Pastor, I won’t be able to get down to SA in time….) it should be a lot of fun, I did it last year and the response from everyone was very gratifying.
I was speaking with Susan Kanode on Friday (maybe Saturday, I was working on my sermon so it must have been Saturday…anyway….) she mentioned how she has now attended over 30 rodeo performances so far this year. Every NWSS one and now she’s up at Fort Worth and then she’ll be in San Antonio, it’s a lot of work to bring folks the results in a timely manner and props go out to Susan and her company Cowgirl Imaging for the job they do.
We have posted the results from Ft. Worth and Rapid City for you and don't forget, it you have results or a story you'd like to share let me know you can send it to hank@worldofrodeo.com, also if there's anything you'd like to see us do, suggestions let me know.
It’s cold here, not the kind of cold you guys have in the Dakotas, but still cold enough for those of us who aren’t use to it to be a tad miserable, stay warm if you can. And remember “He changes times and seasons; He sets up kings and disposes them. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning” Daniel 2:21

It's been raining here in Central Texas since last night and it's been raining a bunch. It also got cold, (now I know it's not as cold as it is in Denver or Rapid City, or even Ft. Worth, but for those of us used to life in South Central Texas, if it gets below 50 we think it's cold...) and it's almost the end of January and they're having the Cowboy Breakfast in San Antonio to get ready for the San Antonio rodeo, so naturally I got to thinking about random things.
For example, I've attended the San Antonio stock show and rodeo every year since 1985 and I've covered it every year since 1999 and it's always had at least one or two days when it was cold and rainy and generally nasty, except for one year when it was nice the whole time. Part of the fun is slogging through the mud and the muck and the mire and watching as the once-a-year-cowboys and cowgirls try to avoid the mud and the muck and the mire and the natural fertilizer scattered around the grounds because they don't want to get their brand new boots dirty.
Another part of the fun is going to the various barns and watching the kids grooming their animals as they get ready to show them, knowing how many hours they and their families put into the task and doing it all for the love of the land and the animals. Watching the FFA and 4-H'ers and knowing that if these kids take control of the country we'll be in good shape.
Or stopping by another barn and watching a cutting horse competition or watching a horse show, maybe sitting down and taking in a team penning, listening to the competitors and the spectators as they take part in some of the non-marquee events, but where the real show takes place.
And then the main event, the rodeo itself. Now since they've moved the rodeo to the AT&T center, I no longer sit in the stands to watch, instead we're in the bowels of the building in the media room (and the SA Rodeo Committee does a GREAT job of taking care of us) or wandering the halls getting an interview, where it's more work than play, but still it's a great way to work.
The next time you go to a rodeo, keep your eyes open for all the little things, the kids, the young lovers, the old lovers, the real cowboys and cowgirls the real Americans and then give thanks to our God that we're able to enjoy this true American sport.....
Have a great blessed weekend - i'll see you Monday....

This morning I sat down at the computer and thought 'maybe I'll write something about team roping, after all I live in the middle of Texas and we have more team ropers than deer. Rich Skelton, Tee Woolman both live over in Llano, Tyler Magnus lives up in Lampasas (well at last word...), George Strait has his roping down in Boerne so I thought it'd be a natural topic, except well I don't rope (depth perception problems...) but I love the sport. So I put the idea aside and headed out to breakfast.
When I got home there was a message from Joel Bach on my phone (Joel's the son of world champion roper Allen Bach) and Joel wanted to talk to me. Now I had met Allen several years ago at the San Antonio rodeo when I interviewed him for my radio program 'The Cowboy Gospel Hour' (I'm the Pastor of the Central Texas Cowboy Church in Marble Falls) and he and I had discussed Allen's walk to salvation and how he wanted to use his skills as a roper to open doors to talk with young and old about Jesus.
I called Joel and he told me about that Allen was trying to focus on his Camp of Champions Mentor-ship Roping Camps and how Allen was now trying to do even more with his ministry. We talked about one of the sites that is involved Forever Cowboys which is a site promoting Christianity and whose team includes such stars as Bobby Mote, Clay Tryan, Clay O'Brien Cooper, D J Domangue, David Key, Kory Koontz, Jake Barnes, Patrick Smith, Stran Smith, Charlie Kingsbury and Matt Austin. Now I've interviewed almost all these guys at one time or another and I've noticed that their faith is strong and not fake. I mention that because sometimes I run into people who make a big show out of professing their belief but sure don't walk the walk. These guys aren't perfect but they sure do hold up under the light of day.
Allen is offering clinics and you can find out more about his clinics and his ministry at his site Allen Bach Roping
If you know of any Christian rodeo schools or camps, send me a note, let me know about them, you can never have too many people spreading His word.

I was reading the story about San Antonio redoing the way the competitors would perform this year and it struck me that maybe rodeo as a whole could stand a reorganization. Oh we have the circuits, but that isn't exactly the best way to go, after all the all-around world champion Trevor Brazile didn't even qualify for the Texas Circuit Finals rodeo because he didn't compete in enough Texas rodeos. Yes, you read that right, the PRCA's All-Around World Champion didn't qualify for the Texas Circuit Finals.
Rodeo is the only major sport where there's no minor league, we have the PRCA at the top, with a bunch of small associations scattered around the country and there's no real way to work your way up the ladder or learn your craft. You can participate simply by buying a membership card and there's not really any set of standards that competitors must meet in order to advance. One of the issues I hear from fans is that you never know who's going to show up at the local rodeos, you're never certain about the quality of the performers (both human and livestock).
I've heard people suggest a system like the PBR's challenger system and if you don't earn enough money in the top rank you're dropped out and someone else moves up but I wonder if that would work in rodeo? It seems that there are too many variables for that to be effective; for example, in team roping would you require that a team stay together for a year, six months, a week? In steer wrestling would you require a competitor use the same hazer each time? How do you guarantee the quality of the livestock?
Should the PRCA begin to take into consideration the earnings of competitors in the CPRA, IPRA and other local associations before issuing a card? Should there be some type of qualifying system put in place before people can compete in a PRCA sanctioned rodeo? Should competitors who make the NFR automatically be given entry into their respective circuit finals rodeo regardless of how many rodeos they made in the circuit?
What do you think? Is it time to reorganize professional rodeo?

01/26: Is Rodeo Dead? Or Dying?

I ask myself that question every year when a new rodeo season starts.
The first quarter of each year is filled with the 'big' rodeos, we have SandHills in Odessa, National Western in Denver, Rapid City, Ft. Worth, San Antonio, Tucson, Houston and then Austin and these rodeos are fairly well attended. In fact Ft. Worth, Denver, Odessa, and San Antonio all make a tremendous effort to promote their events outside their local market.
This year Rapid City is also doing more promotion to the rest of the country then I ever remember them doing in the past, Tucson used to actively promote their event but they seem to have cut back in the past couple of years, Houston has never really promoted the actual rodeo, they promote the shows after the performance and their lineup is pretty much a who's who of country music (and other genres) and Austin, well Austin while being the capital of Texas just doesn't seem to be all that Texan, but at least they promote the rodeo in the local market.
But after March, it's time for the local rodeos. You know the one and two day events that in some cases have run for 50-60 years, the ones staffed by volunteers, the ones that a lot of us remember attending with our grandparents and parents, the ones where we knew the cowboys and cowgirls (before they all became 'competitors') were there was a cooler of long necks and folks generally had a party. These are the ones that I often wonder if they can survive another 5-10 years. I wonder if some of them can survive this year.
Since I stared WorldOfRodeo.com in 2000, I've watched as local rodeo after local rodeo began to suffer declining attendance, rodeos where announcers never bothered to announce the results of a ride, where you couldn't hear the name of who was riding, where the music blared so loud the speakers distorted and where the rodeo ran for well over 3 hours. And people get irritated, children get tired and then they don't come back the next year and a part of our heritage dies a bit at a time.
As our towns change, as ranches are broken into 5-10 acre ranchettes, as rural America disappears I ask you, what is the answer? Is it time to look at the sport of rodeo as a quaint part of our past? Is it still viable in your community?
Is rodeo dying?
