Western Champs in Position for Repeat Titles DENVER, Colo. --- Three of the 2009 National Western Stock Show Rodeo champions made their first appearance at the Denver Coliseum on Friday. Bradley Harter and Nancy Hunter were the most successful of the three. Harter from Weatherford, Texas, scored 80 points in saddle bronc riding. He and Andrew Counts from Stephenville, Texas are now tied for fourth place in the first round. While the 80 may not get either man a check in the round, the solid performance gives them the opportunity to qualify for the finals here if they get another good score. Harter has won this rodeo two out of the last three years. “Denver has been good to me,” Harter said. “It’s always good to start out the year with a win and I’ve been fortunate here.” Hunter won the barrel racing here last year on her great horse Fuzz. She has started her year in similar fashion by taking the lead in the first round with a 15.50 second run. Kanin Asay from Powell, Wyo., won the bull riding here last year but probably won’t have an opportunity for a repeat title. Asay was unsuccessful on David Bailey Rodeo’s bull named Kiamichi on Friday night. All of these contestants have their second appearance here at the Saturday morning performance. Harter will need another great ride in saddle bronc riding to keep his hopes of another Denver title alive. Hunter is in a similar situation. Asay will be hoping to repeat his 91-point ride that he had in the second round of competition in 2009. That would get him a good check for the round. There will be new contestants at the 3:30 and 8 p.m. performances making their first and second appearances here. Story Continues Below
