Utah Bronc Riders Find Groove in Fort Worth Susan Kanode
FORT WORTH, Texas --- Rusty Allen watched the 2009 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo from his home in Eagle Mountain, Utah, rather than riding in it like he had the past five years. Allen finished the year in 18th place in the saddle bronc riding standings. The top 15 qualify for rodeo’s championship event. So, instead of getting on 10 of the world’s best bucking horses in Las Vegas last December, he went home, spent some time with his family, and got rid of some nagging injuries. He came to Fort Worth after some disappointing performances at other rodeos and was beginning to wonder if his 2010 year was going to be similar to 2009. After competing in the Will Rogers Memorial Coliseum on Monday, things are definitely looking up. During the matinee performance, he got on Andrews Rodeo Company’s horse named Sun Dog and when the judges tallied up their scores he had taken the lead in the first round with an 86. He came back to the evening performance and got on J Bar J Rodeo’s First Dance for 82 points. Allen is now in second place in the over-all standings with 166 points and is making plans to be back here Sunday night for the finals. “I wasn’t too sure about the second horse I got on,” he said. “It could have gone either way. It does a lot for your confidence when you do well at a big rodeo like this. The three months I had at home was pretty good motivation. I feel really good and just hope this continues.” Allen is the only member in his traveling group who isn’t one of the Wright brothers. His time spent on the rodeo trail is with the 2008 world champion Cody Wright from Milford, Utah. Also in the rig are Cody’s younger brothers Alex and Jesse. Jesse was the 2009 Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association Rookie of the Year in saddle bronc riding. Cody and Alex were also 82 points at the Monday night performance and Jesse was 80. Jake competed here earlier in the week. Cody is tied for third place here with reigning world champion Jesse Kruse with 162 points on two head. Jake is tied for third and Alex and Jesse are tied for 12th. The top 12 will advance to Sunday’s finals and there is a good possibility that at least two of the Wright brothers will be there. Last year’s barrel racing champion Jordon Peterson had some success in Monday’s matinee aboard her great horse Jester. While they aren’t winning any money in the first round, their 17.40-second run will most likely put them among the top 50 that advance to the second round. Barrel racing was fast during the evening performance with another run under 17 seconds. Brenda Mays from Terrebonne, Ore., had a 16.98-second run to move into second place. Sherrylynn Johnson from Henryetta, Okla., still leads the first round at 16.95. There are two performances of the Worlds Original Indoor Rodeo on Tuesday, at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Story Continues Below
